I’m hard at work on the next Bud Blair novel “Not Before Midnight,” and while it includes the Sheriff of Lake County, and can be thought of as novel five in the series, the action keeps moving north on me. Some of my characters boss me around from time to time. I only think I know where the story is heading. Sometimes I actually do know, but not always, and not for long. I mean, who is in charge here?
At any rate, I am hoping to finish a draft in the next two weeks. My wife says we can take a short vacation after that. I keep hearing echoes of my father saying I could go fishing or float the river with my buddies as soon as I finished my chores.
I keep wondering at what age I’ll find myself enjoying the rewards before the work is done. Does that ever happen? I’m thinking I had it right as a kid. First you play, then you work. Right?
