Ken Kesey’s novel “Sometimes a Great Notion” has a line about wintertime rain on the Oregon coast and a human affliction he called “standing and staring.” He described people just standing and staring out windows at the constant rain.
I like the first snow of the year. It’s mutes the noise of civilization, and it’s clean. But I’m now watching a fourth winter storm drop heavy snow on my three-storm-total of thirty-five inches, and I, too, have succumbed to “standing and staring.”
I look forward to the first sunny days. Maybe I’ll find a nice warm rock and cook the winter chill from my bones, a sure cure for “standing and staring.”
